Short-Term Milestones (by end of 2017)
DOT will continue to install accessible pedestrian signals at 75 intersections each year.
In 2017, DOT installed accessible pedestrian signals (APS) at 75 intersections. There are now APS units, which send audible and vibrotactile indications when pedestrians push a button, at 286 intersections citywide.
DOT will expand its in-house pedestrian ramp program and invest additional funds over the next four years for pedestrian ramp upgrades by contractors.
In 2016, DOT launched a new program to upgrade pedestrian ramps on corners with in-house construction crews. These crews upgrade pedestrian ramps along recently resurfaced street segments, and respond to complaints of defective or non-ADA compliant pedestrian ramps. Starting in late summer 2017, DDC managed contractors will begin performing upgrades as well in Lower Manhattan. As of December 15, 2017, DOT in-house construction crews have completed upgrades at over 2,000 corners citywide in 2017.

DOT works in partnership with DDC to advance the principles of universal access in every capital project, and DOT’s ADA coordinator reviews all capital projects in the scoping and design phases. In early 2018 DOT will update its Street Design Manual to include the principle of universal access (also known as "inclusive design") and DOT staff actively engage in periodic learning and development courses to ensure adequate knowledge on the latest ADA and inclusive design standards.
