Learn from our peer cities across the globe

DOT will seek to learn from global best practices in peer cities worldwide as it advances its sustainable transportation agenda.

Strategic Plan 2016 Initiative

Short-Term Milestones (by end of 2017)

Update Description

DOT will produce a report benchmarking NYC's performance against peer cities on a variety of transportation best practices and outcomes.

DOT surveyed current benchmarking reports and found a wealth of existing knowledge regarding NYC's position among its global peers in terms of transportation best practices. This is including but not limited to the Arcadis Sustainable Cities Index, UN Habitat's City Prosperity Index, and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development's Sustainable Urban Mobility Indicators. In addition, DOT reviewed the NYC Department of City Planning's 2008 report, World Cities Best Practices: Innovations in Transportation, and commissioned our own review of transportation performance and performance measures of NYC in comparison to other leading cities, which the agency is using for further internal review. DOT will continue to explore ways to foster the piloting and adoption of transportation best practices within the agency.

DOT will continue to host visitors, participate in and help to organize conferences, and explore opportunities for personnel exchanges with peer agencies.

DOT has hosted multiple visitors from other cities in the U.S. and abroad, including Shanghai, Mexico City, Prague, Stockholm, and London. Senior DOT staff have engaged in work-focused meetings, exchanges, and video conferences with city staff in London, Barcelona, Seattle, Washington, DC, Paris, Guangzhou, and other cities. DOT has worked with and contributed to meetings of the National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO), the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), C40, the United Nations, Transportation Research Board, American Public Transportation Association, Women’s Transportation Seminar, American Planning Association, and the Ford Foundation. DOT also held a Accessible Streetscape Summit in January 2018.
